- 2012: #15 Leigh vs #2 Duke (75-70 1st Rnd)
Leigh earned an automatic bid by winning the Patriot League Tournament and with it an opening round match-up against Duke. Despite the tough draw, the Mountain Hawks were up for the challenge. Leigh was led by CJ McCollum, the Patriot League player of the year and the nation’s fifth-leading scorer while Duke had a solid back court in Austin Rivers and Seth Curry. The Blue Devils shot poorly from behind the arc (6-26) and had no answer for McCollum who led all scorers with 30 points. It was the first and only NCAA Tournament win in school history for the Mountain Hawks who would lose their next game to Xavier 70-58.
- 2013: #9 Wichita State vs #1 Gonzaga (76-70 2nd Rnd)
The Shockers received an at-large bid after an impressive regular season in which they finished 2nd in the Missouri Valley Conference and runner-up in their conference tournament. Gonzaga was on a roll having won 14 straight entering the tournament and receiving their first #1 seed in school history. After leading by as many as 13, Wichita State held a 5 point lead at halftime, 36-31. But the Bulldogs fought back and led 49-41 with about 12 minutes left to play. In the end, the Shockers’ 3 point shooting (14 of 28) proved to be to much for Gonzaga to overcome. The Cinderella story for Wichita State would continue as they beat La Salle and Ohio St to advance to the Final Four for the first time in nearly 50 years (1965). The Shockers then fell to eventual National Champion Louisville 72-68 but their performance set the stage for years to come. Wichita State made the Tournament the next 5 years and earned an impressive #1 seed in 2014.
