* 1986: #11 LSU vs #6 Purdue (94-87 2OT 1st Rnd)
The LSU Tigers struggled in conference play and finished tied for 5th in the SEC with a record of 9-9. Their magical Final Four run began with a wild double overtime win against the Purdue Boilermakers. LSU went on to beat #3 Memphis State, #2 Georgia Tech and finally #1 Kentucky who they had lost to in previous 3 meetings. They are the only team in tournament history to beat the top 3 seeds from their region. Led by Hall of Fame coach Dale Brown, the Tigers eventually lost to the National Champion Louisville team in the National Semifinal game after becoming the first #11 seed to make it to the Final Four.
* 1987: #6 Providence vs #2 Alabama (103-82 Reg. Semifinal)
The Friars followed up their NIT appearance the year before with a Cinderella story under 2nd year head coach Rick Pitino. Providence advanced to their 2nd Final Four in school history by knocking off the two top seeds in their region (Alabama and Georgetown) by a combined 36 points. They lost to Syracuse in the National Semifinal game in what would be Pitino’s final game as the Friars’ head coach before moving on to the NBA (New York Knicks).
