Beginning with the 1985 Tournament (the first year the field was expanded to 64 teams), Bracket Bingo Busters remembers the biggest upsets, buzzer beaters and Cinderella stories.
* 1985: #8 Villanova vs #1 Michigan (59-55 2nd Rnd)
The Villanova Wildcats finished their regular season tied for 3rd in the Big East with a record of 9-7. Having lost twice to Georgetown, the Wildcats eventually beat the Hoyas (the “Perfect Game”) to win their first National Championship in school history. But before that improbable win they had another against the top-seeded Michigan Wolverines. The Big 10 Champions, who were ranked 2nd in the nation behind Georgetown, had won 17 consecutive games before the upset to Hall of Fame coach Rollie Massimino’s squad.
