Hey college basketball fans, the official countdown has begun with only 3 weeks remaining! The first game of the season is set to tip off at noon on Nov. 5th with Central Arkansas going up against the Baylor Bears. A total of 233 D-1 teams will be in action and while most games may be nothing more than a sparring match between unevenly matched opponents, there will be a few heavyweight bouts to keep an eye on.
- The State Farm Champions Classic looks more a Final Four than an early season showcase. All four teams are preseason favorites to make a deep run in March. The first game will feature Kansas taking on Duke at Madison Square Garden followed by Michigan St going up against Kentucky.
- Another team with big expectations this year is the Louisville Cardinals who will face a tough road test. They open their season with an ACC match-up against the Miami Hurricanes who are looking to return to the Big Dance for the 4th time in 5 years.
- An intriguing neutral-site game will be played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD. The Gaels of St. Mary’s will battle the Wisconsin Badgers as both teams have aspirations of returning to the tournament for a second year in a row.
- The “mid-major” match-up of of the day belongs to Furman vs Gardner-Webb. The Paladins are looking to quench a 40-year drought as they have not been to the tournament since 1980. Meanwhile, the Runnin’ Bulldogs hope to make it two years in a row after making it to the Big Dance for the first time in school history last year. Gardner-Webb currently has the 9th longest home-winning streak in the nation at 14 games and is 24-2 at Paul Porter Arena over the past two seasons.
